Child trafficking statistics:

Global trafficking statistics

Worldwide, 40.3 million men, women and children were victims of modern slavery on any day in 2016.

Walk Free Foundation, Global Slavery Index, 2018

1 in 4 victims of modern slavery in 2016 were children – a total of 10.1 million child victims.

International Labour Organisation, Walk Free Foundation and International Organisation for Migration, Global Estimates of Modern Slavery: Forced Labour and Forced Marriage, 2017

trafficking statistics IN THE UK.

10,627 potential victims of human trafficking were identified in 2018 – a 52% increase from 2018.

Home Office, National Referral Mechanism Statistics: UK, End of Year Summary, 2019

Nearly half (43%) of all potential victims of trafficking  – 4,550 victims – were children aged 18 and under.

Effects of child trafficking

Trafficking can have both short and long term effects and the impact can last a lifetime.

Children and young people who’ve been trafficked might:

  • not understand what’s happened to them is abuse – especially if they’ve been groomed
  • believe they’re in a relationship with their abuser and unaware they’re being exploited
  • think they played a part in their abuse or have broken the law
  • feel very guilty or ashamed about the abuse they’ve suffered.

Children are often too scared to speak out. They might be frightened of:

  • what’ll happen to themselves, their friends and their family
  • all adults and authorities
  • being prosecuted for a crime
  • being returned to their home country where their situation may be even worse
  • Juju or witchcraft rituals performed during their experiences
  • judgement from their community and families.

C.ET: stigmatization.

They may also feel very guilty or ashamed about the abuse they’ve suffered.

It’s estimated that internationally there are between 20 million and 40 million people in modern slavery today. Assessing the full scope of human trafficking is difficult because so cases so often go undetected, something the United Nations refers to as “the hidden figure of crime.”[2]

C.ET: definition disagreement, hidden figures, very difficult to gauge.

Estimates suggest that, internationally, only about .04% survivors of human trafficking cases are identified, meaning that the vast majority of cases of human trafficking go undetected. [3]

Human trafficking earns global profits of roughly $150 billion a year for traffickers, $99 billion of which comes from commercial sexual exploitation.[4]

List of Countries by GDP (Nominal)

United States remains the largest economy of the world with GDP (Nominal) over $20 trillion in 2019. It represents a quarter share of the global economy (24.8%). China follows, with $14 trillion, or 16.3% of the world economy. Tuvalu has the world’s smallest national economy with a GDP (nominal) of approximately $42 million. In World Factbook estimates, Niue, small island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, is the smallest economy with GDP of $10 mn in year 2003.

More than 2/3.

Globally, an estimated 71% of enslaved people are women and girls, while men and boys account for 29%.[5]

Estimates suggest that about 50,000 people are trafficked into the US each year, most often from Mexico and the Philippines. [6]

In 2018, over half (51.6%) of the criminal human trafficking cases active in the US were sex trafficking cases involving only children.[7]

C.ET: maybe due to be the ones specially dealt with, detected??

Advocates report a growing trend of traffickers using online social media platforms to recruit and advertise targets of human trafficking.[9]

The average age a teen enters the sex trade in the US is 12 to 14 years old. Many victims are runaway girls who were sexually abused as children.[10]

C.ET: what I meant is that even if they have the victims in front of them, or have information about the victims, they won’t record it, they won’t specify what age, they won’t specify what abuses. even after interviewing people. this data should be recorded but ‘has been lost’. a recurrent situation in social sciences research.

For example, when they interview a victim, they won’t bother record their ages, their conditions…. or they will record it but when the data is agglomerated within bigger or other surveys, the ones you get at the end, these data have been lost!!

Human Trafficking is an underground crime, so it’s difficult to measure, and more research is desperately needed. But we know the problem is real. We know the problem is big. And behind every estimate is a real person who cannot be dismissed.

In 2017, the International Labour Organisation expanded their reporting on trafficking & exploitation (what they call modern-slavery) to include forced marriage. Under that definition, 40.3 million are estimated to be victims at any given moment.

Under US federal law, all children involved in commercial sex are victims of human trafficking. Sadly, only about half of US states have laws that protect sexually exploited children from being prosecuted for prostitution.

C.ET: LGBT people are also particularly targeted.

Love146 has connected with situations of trafficking in which exploiters have been family members, peers, romantic partners, educators, employers, community leaders, and clergy – of all ages, ethnicities & genders.

In reality, few trafficked children are swept off the street and thrown into white vans. Instead, they’re pulled into a life by traffickers that they may not have words for. Sometimes they continue going to school, living at home, and participating in extracurricular activities – even while they are being trafficked.

Human Trafficking has been happening forever, but only in the year 2000 was it recognised as a crime by the US Government & the United Nations.

Child human trafficking victims: Challenges for the child welfare system

Rowena Fong *, Jodi Berger Cardoso

– most of the research and resources for trafficking victims have been directed towards

adults rather than children (Fong, 2010).

– Researchers agree that there is a growing number of sexually exploited and trafficked children in the United States (Boxill & Richardson, 2007; Estes & Weiner, 2002; Spangenberg, 2001).

– yet few programs emphasize the unique experiences and special needs of this population (Fong, 2010).

– Many of the domestic victims of sexual exploitation are vulnerable youth on the street or from the foster care system(Fong, 2010).

– approximately 25% (224) of prostitution cases occurred while the child was living at home, 59% (532) of the children participated in local sex rings run by pimps and 16% (145) engaged in national sex prostitution rings (Estes & Weiner, 2002). Estes and Weiner (2002).

– Children who live close to international borders (Fong, 2010).

Many juvenile victims of sexual exploitation are funneled

through the juvenile justice system. They are often arrested on

charges of prostitution or illegal work (Fong, 2010).

  Previous research consistently

demonstrates the negative impact of child sexual abuse on

child and adult mental health outcomes. In a recent study of such

abuse victims, Spatato, Mullen, Burgess, Wells, & Moss (2004)

found increased incidences of acute anxiety and stress disorders,

affective disorders, conduct disorders and personality disorders.

Other mental health problems may include acute post-traumatic

stress symptoms, low self-esteem, suicidality, poor academic

achievement, substance abuse, disassociation and poor interpersonal

relationship quality (Cohen & Mannarino, 2008; Corcoran &

Pillai, 2008).

– Domestic and international victims of human trafficking are

typically not eligible for services until they have been officially

classified as victims of trafficking. This has often been a hardship

for governmental and non-governmental agencies, who do receive

funding for services until this classification status is achieved. Once

sexually exploited youth have been identified, there are few secure

shelters and treatment programs that can aid in rehabilitation and

reintegration. Moreover, many shelters and treatment programs

do not provide services specific to sexually exploited youth (Fong, 2010).

– Human trafficking victims often

have extra needs for anonymity in group therapy and fear that

family members may be harmed because traffickers use death

threats to enforce compliance (Fong, 2010).

– Many models aim to accomplish at least one of four goals:

symptom reduction, destigmatization, increasing self-esteem and

self-concept and prevention of future abuse (Lev-Wiesel, 2008).

A plethora of barriers in child welfare and other public systems

impede the identification of children who have been sexually

abused. To tackle victim identification, public child welfare

workers and social service providers need to work closely with

juvenile detention facilities, court system, emergency shelters, and

school social workers (Boxill & Richardson, 2005). Until recently,

these entities were completely unaware that U.S. children were

being exploited for commercial sex. While awareness of the issue is

still lacking, successful programs in New York and Atlanta have

helped draw national attention (Fong, 2010).

C.ET: said to be unaware, but in fact unprepared and uncooperative, or not disclosing or tackling.

Few treatment and social service programs are equipped to

address the complex needs of children who may have experienced

torture, rape, drug abuse, trafficking and physical abuse. In

addition, many of these young women and men must grapple (Fong, 2010).

The impact;

  • Human trafficking has surpassed the illegal sale of armsthumb No More
  • Trafficking will surpass the illegal sale of drugs in the next few years
  • Drugs are used once and they are gone. Victims of child trafficking can be used and abused over and over
  • A $32 billion-a-year industry, human trafficking is on the rise and is in all 50 states (U.S. Government)
  • 4.5 Million of trafficked persons are sexually exploited
  • Up to 300,000 Americans under 18 are lured into the commercial sex trade every year

Joe, I found the figure of 1.2 million you talked about. They may have kept the number because it is a good poster, or it is a poster that is old. Under this poster with the figure of 1.2 million they talk about new figures and nowhere 1.2 million is corresponding to anything- I wonder whether 1.2 million could be about how many more children have been abused each year. And therefore it is a figure that is added to the already existent one.

The most agreed on estimates are 10 million children worldwide.

Keep in view things are changing, and in fact they are worsening. -or are they better spotted, better identified, denounced??…whatever the reasons. figures of identified cases are growing.

A heavy toll for the victims of human trafficking

By Adriana Hauser and Mariano Castillo, CNN

Their descent into prostitution followed different paths but ended up in the same nightmare: abuse, drugs and fear.

For years, the girls who sell their bodies on certain Miami streetcorners and in hotels were treated as criminals. But new state laws have instructed police and judges to look at the wider context and consider them victims of sex exploitation.

South Florida is the third-busiest area for sex trafficking in the United States, the Department of Justice says, and oftentimes it is children who are drawn into the web without even realizing it.

Once girls enter the sex industry, their average life expectancy is seven years, with homicide and AIDS being the top killers, Rodriguez said.

A friend invited her to a hotel when she was 18.

“She knew what was going to happen, but I didn’t,” Samantha said. “I didn’t realize it until later.”

April has two children, ages 2 and 4, and works as a prostitute to pay for their needs and for her education, she said.

Initially, it was a boyfriend who get her involved in prostitution.

She was working as a stripper, she said, when she met the guy, who promised her clients and money.

“I want to stop,” she said.

“If I can find a job.”

Children are 4 times more likely to be trafficked for labor rather than sex

Children who are trafficked for labor purposes might be removed from their families and forced to perform domestic household services, or work in factories or agriculture.

Though millions of children are trafficked, there is a much larger number of children involved in child labor that is not considered trafficking.

There are an estimated 168 million child laborers around the world, with around half of them participating in what is known as “hazardous work” – work that endangers the child’s physical, emotional, or social well-being.

55% of victims are women and girls

Child labor makes it difficult for children to succeed in school (if they attend at all). Lack of education ultimately limits a child’s lifetime earning potential and keeps them in poverty, thus perpetuating the cycle for their own children.

98% of victims trafficked for sexual exploitation are women and girls.

Trafficker Tricks

India is heavily involved in sex trafficking as a source, destination, and transit country, despite legislation and increased efforts to combat trafficking. Often, traffickers will come to a village claiming to be recruiting employees for a large business or corporation.

They promise job training, excellent salaries, and the ability to move into higher positions over time. The young women they lure – generally with their parents’ consent or coercion – leave the village with these traffickers and find that once they are in a big city they are sold to a brothel, or otherwise forced to engage in commercial sex work.

If they resist, they risk being beaten, raped, or killed. Alone and in an unfamiliar place, there is nothing they can do.

The marriage dowry trick

Or a young man will visit a village saying he is looking for a wife and that he is willing to accept a girl without a marriage dowry. The thought of getting a daughter married without having to pay the typically exorbitant dowry is too tempting for impoverished families.

The girl is given to the man thinking she will be married and taken care of, but instead she is whisked away and forced into the sex trade.

13 sex trafficking statistics that explain the enormity of the global sex trade

Cara Kelly USA TODAY

Sex trafficking is a massive, worldwide problem that can take many forms.

One of the most prolific: America’s multibillion-dollar illicit massage industry.

The prominence of illegal parlors and their ties to sex trafficking

the problem is growing, to as many as 9,000 illicit spas in the U.S. alone.

Here are 13 statistics that help explain the scope of the problem.

1. There are more than 4 million victims of sex trafficking globally

2. 99% are women and girls

7 in 10 victims were exploited in Asia and the Pacific region

According to the International Labour Organization report, more than 70% of sex trafficking victims were located in Asia and the Pacific, compared with 14% in Europe and Central Asia and 4% in the Americas.

In illicit massage parlors in the U.S., the vast majority of reported trafficking victims are from China, with a notable number from the Fujian province in southeastern China. South Korea forms the second highest group.

1 in 7 reported runways in the U.S. in 2018 is likely a victim of child sex trafficking

Profits from forced sexual labor are estimated at $99 billion worldwide

Profits are highest per sex trafficking victim in developed economies

Events like the Super Bowl increasingly are monitored for sex trafficking

Efforts to combat trafficking around major events have increased in recent years, most notably around the Super Bowl.

“It’s not necessarily about football or the NFL,” Courtney Dow, an outreach coordinator for the Atlanta-based nonprofit Dream Center, told USA TODAY before Super Bowl LIII in January. “When groups of men get together, usually trafficking and exploitation increases.”

Prosecutions of sex trafficking are down in the U.S.

The State Department’s 2019 Trafficking in Persons Report found the Department of Justice opened significantly fewer human trafficking investigations in 2018 compared to 2017, dropping from 783 to 657. It also reported significantly fewer prosecutions: 230, down from 282.

That holds true for cases specifically focused on sex trafficking. Of the prosecutions, 213 were for sex trafficking, down from 266 in 2017.

Victims are still arrested for crimes they were forced to commit by traffickers

The State Department’s report found that at the state and local level, victims are still being arrested for crimes they’re compelled to commit such as commercial sex work, including child victims.

This comes despite a push for “safe harbor” laws, passed in at least 34 states, which are meant to stop child sex trafficking victims from being prosecuted for prostitution and other charges related to commercial sex.

Professor argues it should be legal for grown men to have sex with children. Let that sink in.

Hubbard also says that the problem of young boys without fathers might be resolved by having men have sex with those boys.

In his writing, this bozo argues that Ancient Greece showed us that “where age discrepant relationships are commonplace and positively reinforced, they cause little or no long-term harm to the younger partner and often confer great benefit,” he writes.

This was contained in a 22-page article Hubbard wrote for a journal called Thymos, entitled “Sexual Consent and the Adolescent Male, or What Can We Learn From the Greeks.”

Hubbard justifies his sickening position by saying that America “should consider moving in the direction of what most European states do, which is to maintain an age of consent of 14 or 15 with special protections against prostitution of those under 18 or involvement with an adult who is in a position of trust (family  members, teachers, therapists, clergy), he said.

Wow…boundaries. Shocking actually.

There are activists on the UT campus who have been trying to get Hubbard ousted from the university. A student group known as “Fire the Abusers” says that Hubbard is “guilty” of publishing works arguing that “statutory rape and age of consent laws are burdens.”

French Pedophile Accused Of Molesting 300 Kids Could Be Executed By Firing Squad

A French man who was traveling in Indonesia on a tourist visa was arrested by police in the capital city of Jakarta, after he was found sexually assaulting two young girls in a hotel room. The suspect, 65-year-old Francois Abello Camille, was accused of molesting and beating over 300 children, after video evidence was found in possession during the arrest.

In the raid of the hotel room, police found Camille’s laptop computer, which contained hundreds of videos showing him sexually assaulting young children.

All of those children were physically located and interviewed about potentially being sexually victimized or used in a sex trafficking ring during the time they were missing.

QAnon Followers Are Hijacking the #SaveTheChildren Movement

Fans of the pro-Trump conspiracy theory are clogging anti-trafficking hotlines, infiltrating Facebook groups and raising false fears about child exploitation.

QAnon, the sprawling pro-Trump conspiracy theory.

These people were also disturbed about human trafficking, but with a dark twist: Many of them believed that President Trump was on the verge of exposing “Pizzagate” or “Pedogate,” their terms for a global conspiracy involving a ring of Satan-worshiping, child-molesting criminals led by prominent Democrats.

My acquaintance is not a QAnon believer. And she certainly doesn’t think, as some QAnon adherents do, that Hillary Clinton and her cronies are kidnapping and eating children (yes, eating them) in order to harvest a life-extending chemical from their blood.

The idea, in a nutshell, is to create a groundswell of concern by flooding social media with posts about human trafficking, joining parenting Facebook groups and glomming on to hashtag campaigns like #SaveTheChildren, which began as a legitimate fund-raising campaign for the Save the Children charity.

The QAnon strategy of pushing some unobjectionable, often factual content about human trafficking in addition to wild conspiracy theories has blurred the lines between legitimate anti-trafficking activism and partisan conspiracy mongering.

the Polaris Project, a nonprofit organization that runs the National Human Trafficking Hotline, issued a news release saying its hotline had been overwhelmed with false reports.

It later published a blog post warning that “unsubstantiated claims and accusations about child sex trafficking can spin out of control and mislead well-meaning people into doing more harm than good.”

C.ET: this so late onset to start legislation that tried to apply their principles maybe due to the mafia, maybe due to the colonialist attitude of the people in power (understand in that, everyone that may hold and abuse power at every scale and level of the society), but it might also come from what people often misappropriately called family values, i.e. whatever happens within close doors will stay within these doors. Children, individuals, belonged to the church (or to any other religious apparatus- in islam, hinduism, other religions and sects), to the family……child could be even when states were concerned be disposed of the way patriarchy (or matriarchy) found it suitable.

I’d like to make clear that prostitution is slavery, particularly concerning youths, that are in fact breed in order to become this way exploited. You can even find rich guys bringing up ‘their’ children that way in order to reassure they own costumers, “do not worry we won’t do an officer of that one or we know what the boss is expecting in priority”.

I want to make very clear that prostitution is used not as a way of having sex, but as a way of destroying somebody. As a way of procuring oneself slaves for life in drugging them or inflicting psychological, mental, psychic, physical, trauma than no one can escape ever after.

Prostitution is a perpetual threat to the society, saying that you ll have it, if you don’t go down the lines.

Prostitution involved in general abuses to children in order to render them so in pain, and so incapable to trust anybody- for who apart them parents will talk to them?. A simple teacher in his career will meet score of pupils about whom he knows they encounter problem and sometimes sheer sexual abuses. they aren’t welcomed by their profession to talk about it. Very dangerous. Lose your seat. They aren’t even expected to give regular warnings against being sexually abused, letting children, thousands of them (thanks to social sciences stastistics we know that serious abuses during childhood range to astonishing 2, 3 women in 5, while other abuses less serious than outright and repeated sexual violence but mental and psychological or threat and attempt at non-consensual sex will concerned all of them.

Predators are awaiting the innocent child or the under informed or too sociable teens.

Predators or at least the ones that make an industry of it, will try to be parents, more surely will be.

Objective producing human beings so traumatised that they could stay their abusers’ dependent forever. Too traumatised to be welcomed by ‘normal’ people. Seemingly too aggressive or alert to suit the normal apathy and  psychological consensuality.

‘To kill somebody’

Not to ‘break somebody’ like the paedophile will say ‘amused by their relative freedom’  protected by the total taboo preserved up to the middle of the schools; but to ‘kill somebody’. It is done by ‘skilful’ persons that make their victims unwelcomed by the rest of the society, that molest their child when ‘they act normally, or cope well’, when they play, when they think, when they try and eat and they are hungry, when they are ‘too quiet’, when they feel they would like to speak with somebody’, when they feel the pain, when they try to stop it…

And who ‘give rewards’ against, in exchange of sex, scenario of affection, that are pretexts for sexual proximity, when the child or the adult will start’’ misbehaving’’ meaning here when they out of being taught display behaviour that make their aggressor out of danger of being found out. For example when they are insulting other people just like that, out of the blue, when they, the child or any other victims reject exterior help, or reject for example anybody that can or might sense that there is a serious or very grave problem going on, or whatever the scale of the abuses might be. To reject or bully anybody that could face and confront or report the abusers.

To be pedophile is against thousands of years of people assassinating and murdering each other to try to give to the next generation more than imposed by satan to angels hell on earth.

These paedophiles and sexual pests of any genres that are pretending to stand for stallions on top of that, and give themselves as example, being sometimes over smiling, cheerful, tactile, and joking all the way welcome by a laugh and charmed reaction by some, and politely ignored by the rest, but who cares about the little monkey they drag or visit at the end of the damned.

And dodging the others into believing that it is just like another industry (of more rotten tha death, that yes certainly)

Quoting and keeping trace of sources might be so time consuming that your renounce or prevent you to make the information, crucial, vital information circulate properly.

I have work for weeks on a post dedicated to human trafficking and sexual exploitation and the documents I worked on, several dozens of pages are troves of information more disgusting about state and organisations stances that one can never imagine. I am still struggling because though the docs are done by universities or charities or even the European parliament, revealing their data would cost me to breach their copyrights. Rewriting their documents in an appropriate way my entire year…

In one
word- sexual trafficking is under the domain of quasi total ‘laissez faire’, see neglect and abandon of one’s assigned duties. It is less risky to traffic women than trafficking drugs. Resources as ridiculous as 2 computers for the UK is devoted to under age prostitution, and the data of and on these sorts went on and on.

Ok sorry for the poor writing and editing skills of what follows: is not good enough but I have to stop postponing it being posted as it will be a while before I can really revising it.

Discuss the contradictions between immigration policy and human rights policies in aiming to protect victims of sexual trafficking in the UK.

Sexual trafficking and the responsibility that it involves within the U.K is sadly a subject that should be at anytime carried to the fore, due to the gravity of the offenses and astonishingly discretely more than present but increasing amount of crimes and bigger mafia corporations within the modern developed countries. Of course considered an attraction to many people in poor or very undemocratic countries; one will have to interrogate the government of richest, more secure and democratic countries that just prove their reluctance at assuming their responsibility to have human rights respected in ‘affording’, putting funds and truly efficient practises and policies aiming at the eradication of sexual trafficking. Instead of this, sexual trafficking is on the rise. The first paragraph will be remembering this issues to be global and human rights universal, the second will focus on how U.K institutions have reacted. The third part will reassert the principle of inalienability, politics of equality, and antonymic problem of double standards rights in case of non-citizenship.

Sexual trafficking clearly denotes an international phenomenon. “Human rights” them, are human and humane thanks to their having been proclaimed universal as a legitimate definition of rights appeals.  The fact that victims of sexual trafficking might well be abroad cannot be answered by making the ‘borders safer’ (Home Office, 2012) what is the prime and main focus of the home office strategies at reducing trafficking in the U.K, do not answer the question of ‘victims protection’ at large.

One of the main reasons for the control of migration is that huge economic inequalities entailing aggravated security threats are supported by controlling the borders, not just in view of securising peace, progress and prosperity but also as a means to keep exchanges and opportunities unequal and sources of deepening injustice. Better immigrations policies are often seen as pull-factors and are thus deemed and fated to stay the object of austerity.

The U.K thus will be under the ‘responsibility to protect’ and from this responsibility have to endeavour for the states and other actors to respect individual life (this term of responsibility to protect is concerning genocide in particular but there is no question about the fact that a gendered slavery of sexual nature will count as gendericide or infanticide- an attempt at undermining /destroying a person because or taking the pretext or the occasion (permitted by the overall status of them being targeted) of her being a woman or a child.

From the fact that one acknowledges a necessity to intervene when fundamental human rights are not observed will follow that whenever a state cannot help a population within the borders of another state enough, it will then will have to recognize the refugees, a status of asylum seeker (Galiana, 2000).

Attesting of this universality and transnationality and of how a system of rights and networks of information and policies convergence are needed are U.N and European treaties such as 1949 UN Convention for the Suppression of the Trafficking in Persons and the exploitation of the prostitution of others. The very importance of reminding universality of rights is an indispensable component. Globalisation and transnational activities includes violations of same nature. One of the most tragic in the way fight against trafficking occurs is that the mafias orchestrating them are and are left to be significantly superiorly organised and powerful than the institutions supposed to stop human and sexual trafficking  (Galiana, 2012). The enunciation of this reality, of institution of justice conspicuously too weak to fight crimes, render in fact states and citizens accomplices.

Now we had reminded that within the U.K is a duty to protect other citizens of other countries, how efficiently the U.K is protecting the victims of trafficking inside its borders is at stake.

While human rights are designed for human, migration and borders issues will prevail on the debate on citizenship. As there is so huge gaps of living conditions between countries, two persons in the same countries will receive different treatment according their being or not citizens of that country. In the case of sexual trafficking, the victims might well be stigmatised by the very officials and condemned instead of being protected (Bindel, 2011) due to the fact they are not citizens.

Within a country, multiple organisations are at stake.

In the first place, to fight the mafia and therefore prevent mafias’ activities one will have to rely on the police. Yet again, this phenomenon cannot be tackled without a global and particularly and European approach matching the transnational features of the mafias involved. Despite the emergency and gravity that this plague represents, an irrelevant amount of information are exchanged in between polices or via Interpol and home offices of the European countries (Galiana, 2000).  Additionally in the U.K the means devoted to fight within the borders are insignificant (Galiana, 2000), (Bindel, 2011). Furthermore the home office will focus their strategies on the permeability of their borders, limiting the subjects to migration, worrying the population about the potentiality of ‘a pull factor’ effect , when the government should start looking properly after the victims. The subject is approached without tackling the problem of sexual abuses perpetrated but focusing on the presence of immigrant persons (Bindel, 2011). As much as being inhumane and inconsiderate to the survivors of these crimes, and the society as a whole more and more exposed to growing crimes organisations and general applied depravity, the ‘pull factor’ effect  relies on a falsification. Yet again instead of tackling the crimes, all the discourses are aiming at the victims. Now there would be no ‘pull factor’ and no more sexual trafficking if the criminals in charge of procuring and all other illegal actions involved would be sentenced and charged with penalties proportional to their deeds (Bindel, 2011). In relation to this situation of unofficial endorsement of trafficking, there is not solvable judiciary system in which women can be protected as a witness and from there finally become the often sole means for the rings leaders and members to be judged. On top of having been institutionally raped and more, once they manage to meet people able to get them out of the ring, they will have to face a police that do not take their ordeals and statements into account. Instead they will take the highest risks declaring what happened to them, to see a justice system completely irresponsive to mafia industry (Jeffreys, 1997). If not given the status of refugee or asylum seeker then women would be send to more retaliation in countries were mafias are powerful enough to enslave them again (Galiana, 2000).

Another discussion will lodge on whether detention of women is enforced or not. Women detained by mafia in view of fleeing their coutries of origins where their choices of opportunities of earning a living are severely limited. When there is no proof of these women being locked up well the matter will be seen as secondary, just like if one could tolerated brothels made up by often lured but always intensively suffering women afraid of everything that could be the subject of changes, rhyming most often and probable with escalation of dangers under control in these conditions directly life threatening intending keeping women (Jeffreys, 1997). Proof of this ‘static conspiracy’ backing of sexual slavery or quasi slavery, always including profound torture for the body and mind, and for the all tissue of social morality, is the way women are left being abused in big and numerous places and brothels (logically know by the police forces) (Jeffreys, 1997). The fact that women victims forced or ‘garrisoned’ by those gangs might face being criminalised and punished for being or having become illegal migrants, in fact something incredibly worrying, and serves as law and well certainly as an standing image for the all ‘justice system and mentality’. If these examples were not sufficient, another rule of the land this colloboration can convey: if one compares the penalties inflict when someone is found being guilty of drugs trafficking, prison sentences might be of several years, over 5 years. If one is found guilty of human trafficking and especially of sexual exploitation, penalties will be of less importance, more than this, penalties will be often inexistent. It may be very lucrative to be a procurer in the U.K and even more when one will steal money from the ‘trade’ to leave women victims of prostitution completely destitute (Galiana, 2000). Even if recognised as having participated in sexual trafficking the penalties inflicted are ridiculously low, when existent at all. In that kind of condition there is no need to insist providing evidence- it is the clear frame in which all other institutions will have to proceed: a quasi-total impunity for sexual trafficking in the judiciary system in the U.K (Bindel, 2011).

The social institutions, will suffer the same fate than police in general, no information, no promotion about gangs or elaboration of inter-agencies aiming at stopping the trade and helping women. For voluntary organisation. An aberration of the u.k system is that the entire country (center and final target of migrants exploitation and transit) is relying on one single project,  the only project specialised in sexual exploitation victims. By comparison the other systems (non specialists) put into places are too flawed and incompetent to respond to the sufferings and other issues (tackling, exit strategy) (Bindel, 2011)

All too pessimistically the relative inertie of the states’ cooperation or of the united kingdom in particular can be explained simply by the facts that such ‘acts of slavery and debasement’ is ‘generating huge profits’ (Jeffreys, 1997), (Galiana, 2000).

The fact that prostitution is harmful for the individual and the societal aims and means should automatically disqualify it as being a professional activity. In the U.K even though prostitution is not legalised, it is tolerated. Taking the position of prostitution being insignificant matters, going as far as saying that it could be a benevolent factors, sexual trafficking is in fact treated as being no more than human trafficking, with no prison penalty as lightly as simple declared work.

The international and national laws and policies in place are reflecting the point of view and should go along the effects that social practises, morals, and laissez-faire have on individuals.

This international trafficking profit states. In satisfying punters demands instead of improving employment universality, and security or instead of infusing a culture where people relation are based on well being, freedom, and self esteem, in involving or giving the opportunities for the population to have a diversity of activities benefiting others (like in Marxism theories, and at least not depending on the dependency and ownership of means of production and exclusivity and enforcement as for the nature of the production and therefore the means of earning a wage).

The fact that perpetrators are not charged, that punters are desresponsibilised will institute what will be seen and said as being a legitimate market were relationship between people will be wrought as fundamentally relying on, depending on falsified notion of work, detrimental interactions, pure vicious and abusive exploitation entailing an impoverishment of the persons’ life as for it forges mindset and network of life going round the continuous and institutionalised violiations of dignity.

Here even immigrants laws will be better to follow for the well being of all and every than some of ‘human rights’ policies or principles. When introducing migration laws texts will guarantee the observation of human rights. Migration home office documents will reminds to all the necessary, the obligation of every one to treat people with dignity own to any human being and its rights and aspirations (to a family life, to security, to education, to have wages and work opportunities ensuring healthy living conditions) (Home Office, 2012). In other quarters some will use concepts as ‘feminism, sexual liberation (that certainly would not need to be paying coercion under the form of commerce if it had coherently occurred) individual liberties, sexual minorities, freedom of enterprise, in order to diminish reforms towards prostitution eradication or towards policies or practises tolerating or even enhancing them.

One of the adjacent discussions is to know about whether sexual exploitation is happening with the consent of the victims or is actually enforced or the fruits of indirect or direct coercion. Some women are duped into thinking they migrate for nanny, catering or other type of jobs advertised in their countries, even if they are bona fide locked up, put into some sort of debt bondage, intimidated by any means, whose belongings, earnings and papers are destroyed or detained. Adults or young children that might have been severely beaten, suffering from multiple, daily and continuous physical, mental, psychological, sexual abuses (Kelly, 1995 ), whose knowledge of the law and language of the countries of arrivals is quasi null, females that might have suffered all sort of horrors and betrays before even being trafficked (Kelly, 1995 ). One of the fundamental pillars of human rights are their being inalienable; it precisely means that when people are being or let take part in activities breaching rights (for example agreeing to slavery or torture) one cannot possibly invoke consent. One never can consent to one’s own destruction or of ‘being possessed’. Inalienability of right therefore means that brothels owners, punters or whoever participating to the terrifying act of trafficking and sex trafficking never should be judged as simply conveying people or as taking on people working illegally but judges as committed acts of sexual and physical degradation that implies that people enduring the ordeals even if they theorically could flee are in fact by some sort of consequences of posterior or present tragedy in such deteriorated mental, intellectual, psychological state that they cannot be exercising anymore the ‘skills, strength, knowledge, experience, assistance or consciousness’ that it may take to avoid been maltreated’.

Equally a very fundamental question of an enlarged definition of trafficking is in fact of the domain of the more ‘private sphere’ and yet still less supervising body of law. Brides trafficking, ’mail-order

brides’,  ‘matrimonial agencies’ or forced marriage, (Galiana, 2012) comes hand in hand with the conspicuous absence of law and mechanisms protecting, from domestic abuses, females married to immigrants men (Thiar, 2010).  It is interesting to note that sexual trafficking may take the form of marriage.

Mafias are mainly left unmatched. Need for prostitution alternatives and secure employment, harmonisation of criminal law at national, European and international level, and real political will and applied efficient policies are needed. Prostitution in the debates is an essential component, are 80 % of prostitutes are immigrants women in Europe (now coming from the East Europe mainly).

From the states to the individuals or groups of individuals, women and children let be the preys of organisations such as ones hosted by richer countries and by most powerful ‘customers’. Here like in the case of prostitutes considered necessary to sustain patriarchalism, women and children (involved in pornography or young girls on whom the consequences of being the victims of such crimes – not victims of an isolated acts but of organisations perpetrating gross fundamental human rights violations such as torture, sequestration, and in my opinion any sexual abuses all the more when targeting people economically or otherwise vulnerable, in an industrial manner or contending this person to have to endorse repeated, organised, intentional, orchestred, lasting in time abuse. The victims are the poorer and more vulnerable people (youth, previous history of personal issues, poverty). At the opposite of random acts, such organisations depends on such structures, that from the punters who pay and prowl to the society actually accepting such suffering to happen through the police not having to intervene as further more the immigrant women would suffer from being treated as a criminal because of their having not paper, treated as a non citizens deprived of human right of being protected of such mafia or anyone who abuse who are profiteerin g from an absence of justice and legislation. Amasingly enough so highly organised and intended crimes are left almost unpunished.

C.ET: I don’t agree at all with the last part of this documentary. Breeding humanely towards death is the most hypocritical human lies. In fact more than hypocrisy at the final it is deceit.

I all the same propose to you to watch the video as it is an excellent documentary.

Please, we beg you, don’t eat meat = cooked murdered cadavers and since it is still legal under your own order.

PS: I hope the little girl won’t be finally paid by the farming industry to sell the lies of them being caring. let’s go on be caring that way, and like all dairy cows we will finish euthanatized just like some of these little new (but well-bred generally) students would recommend ‘out of compassionate care’ anyway. Or start selecting what they want for their barbies dolls convoluting the buttocks buttox later needed (responsible in mass for animal testing).

C.ET: that just shows the infinite torture during breeding and slaughter. However, whose fault is it, and above all there is no worse torture to be de kept alive to be used as food, whatever the methods. It is the filthy fault of meat-eaters.

It is the human species that should be endangered.

C.ET: a video also reminding people that little mammals or little rodents, any animals, must be free and might be pet. That also lead to another big problem, are domestic animals free? Often is a ‘nep’. In a pen, without other companions, enough space to do and move, without mates or spaces. Any how noah where the environment. In-vitro.

TO ANSWER a famous French songwriter: no, this human world is nothing near serious.

This is the case, what procurers think they have to do, in general. No wonder about how well Vichy could have thriven. (with English whose royals are of german origin, and the german that have been historically in pairs with the ottoman empire, and some branches now of islam that are pro-nazis) they were right the risk is that no more wars after that, is it a risk though, nature would say differently as ultimately the human plots is to leave her a barren stone, if any.

Granting Legal Rights to Rivers: Is International Law Ready?
Four rivers around the world now have legal rights. But what are the implications of rights for nature for international environmental law?

August 6, 2018 – by Mara Tignino and Laura E. Turley

Last year, four rivers were granted legal rights: the Whanganui in New Zealand, Rio Atrato in Colombia, and the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in India.

Granting Rights to a River:  Enhancing a Right-Based Approach

In contrast to international law, some countries have granted rights to the nature, and specifically to rivers, in their national laws. In 2008, Ecuador recognized the constitutional right of Mother Earth and, in 2010, Bolivia adopted the Laws on the Rights of Mother Earth, which gives legal standing to nature and establishes an ombudsman for the protection of its rights. And in May 2017, Colombia’s Constitutional Court recognized the Atrato River as a legal person.

More recently, the Parliament of New Zealand granted the country’s third-longest river, the Whanganui, the legal rights of a person, after a 140-year campaign by the Whanganui Iwi tribe. In addition to compensating the Whanganui Iwi for grievances, the move seeks to preserve the river for future generations of Whanganui Iwi and all New Zealanders. As such, the river gains its legal personality not from an abstract legal entity, but from the people that are connected with the river.

India’s Ganges River and one of its main tributaries, the Yamuna River were granted these same rights. The high court in the northern state of Uttarakhand — not the national government, as in New Zealand, Ecuador, and Bolivia—issued the order, citing the case of the Whanganui in establishing that that the Ganges and the Yamuna should be accorded the status of living human entities.

New Zealand’s Parliament has just passed a bill to enable the Whanganui River to be recognised as a legal person. It will now be represented by two nominees: one appointed by the Maori community (or Iwi), and another appointed by the government.

An excellent film about the gathering of evidence and legal fight against one of the most powerful energy corporation on earth. The actual film showing both horrors of environmental industrial ACTIONS causing direct (visible, no need for a chemical kit- and invisible of course) environmental degradation, and the parody of justice, in fact even the travesty of the existence of a simple legal system going on and on.

Every single victory during the past year – from exposing horrific abuse of ducks and geese on a French foie gras farm to helping to convince the UK government to reject an appeal to build a facility in Yorkshire that would have bred hundreds of dogs for use in deadly laboratory experiments – was achieved through the generosity of our compassionate members.

But despite so many recent successes, animals are still being confined to tiny, filthy cages on factory farms; electrocuted, strangled and even skinned alive for “fashion”; cut open, poisoned and mutilated in horrific experiments; and beaten and kept in chains in order to force them to perform for human “entertainment”.

snakes, alligators, lizards and crocodiles in many places around the world, from the Philippines to the United States to South Africa, are being painfully stripped of their skin – usually while still alive –

nailed to trees before being skinned alive and tossed onto a pile to die. They can suffer for days before succumbing to shock or dehydration.

Alligators are kept crowded together in filthy tanks on farms before being clubbed and skinned alive. A PETA US investigation of an alligator farm documented gruesome slaughter methods, including chiselling through an animal’s spinal column with a pointed instrument and hammer. It can take around two hours filled with intense pain for an animal slaughtered this way to die.

Every day, these fascinating forest and river animals are trapped and beaten and have their skin ripped from their bodies simply to create a fashion look. PETA and our international affiliates are the only organisations with a comprehensive approach to prevent the suffering and deaths of snakes, seals, cats, dogs, cows, rabbits, foxes and other animals used for their skin.

“Thahabi endorses the murder of gay people and of Muslims who give up their faith. He says women are deficient and encourages the beating of little girls who refuse to wear the hijab,” said Peter Tatchell, Director of the human rights lobby, the Peter Tatchell Foundation.

“While this cancellation is welcome, the university’s reasons for the cancellation appear to be bogus, feeble and unprincipled.

“The university authorities claim the Thahabi meeting was cancelled because of serious threats of violent protest by extremist groups. I challenge the university to name these groups and reveal the threats.

“Women, Muslim and LGBT students have a right to go to university without being menaced and threatened by hate preachers.

“Disgracefully, the Vice Chancellor has failed to condemn the Muslim Society for invitingThahabi.

A letter had been sent by the Peter Tatchell Foundation to the Vice Chancellor of Reading University, David Bell, protesting at the university’s decision to host Abu Usamah at-Thahabi, on the grounds that Thahabi had been filmed by Channel Four’s Dispatches programme justifying the murder of gay people. Incitement to murder is a serious criminal offence.

There won’t be as many baby seals killed this year, but the slaughter is still going forward.

Crude spiked clubs will crush their still-soft skulls. For some, the skin will be ripped off their bloody bodies while they’re still conscious. All to satisfy a greedy, vain industry that we are working hard to send the way of the dinosaurs.

Please donate now and help us stop the senseless slaughter of seals and other innocent animals.

More than 170,000 harp seals have been slaughtered on the ice floes off Canada’s east coast in recent years. Nearly all of them were less than 3 months old. The seal pups yelp in terror as the sealers’ spiked clubs slam into their heads while other seals nearby can only watch and wail. Many infant seals are bludgeoned before they even eat their first solid meal or learn how to swim.

After violently attacking these young pups, sealers routinely hook them in the eye, cheek, or mouth – sometimes while they are still conscious – to avoid damaging their pelts before dragging the animals across the ice to skin them. They then leave them to die a slow, painful death.

Unless something changes, without more help from animal heroes like you, this horror will occur again. Please donate today so we can ramp up our campaign to stop the slaughter.

Kind regards,

Ingrid E Newkirk

Photo: Muslim mobs attack a Christian area of Lahore after blasphemy allegation (M. Ali)

LAHORE, Pakistan (Morning Star News) – Muslim mobs upset over an alleged derogatory comment about the prophet of Islam burned down more than 180 Christian-owned houses and shops and at least two church buildings here on Saturday (March 9) after authorities told police to “let them vent their grief and anger,” officials said.

Lahore’s impoverished Joseph Colony looked like a war-ravaged town by Saturday night. There were no reports of casualties, but the site was reminiscent of the destruction in Gojra in 2009, when eight Christians were burned alive, 100 houses looted and 50 homes set ablaze after a blasphemy accusation.

“Destruction of Leviathan”. 1865 engraving by Gustave Doré

C.ET: could be a lightning. Beautiful animal. And paint. Anyway it’s French.

Leviathan (/lɨˈvaɪ.əθən/; Hebrew: לִוְיָתָן, Modern Livyatan Tiberian Liwyāṯān ; “twisted, coiled”) is a sea monster referenced in the Tanakh and in the Christian Old Testament.

The Leviathan is mentioned six times in the Tanakh, with Job 41:1-34 being dedicated to describing him in detail:[1]

1 Can you pull in the leviathan with a fishhook or tie down his tongue with a rope?

2 Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook?

3 Will he keep begging you for mercy? Will he speak to you with gentle words?

4 Will he make an agreement with you for you to take him as your slave for life?

5 Can you make a pet of him like a bird or put him on a leash for your girls?

6 Will traders barter for him? Will they divide him up among the merchants?

7 Can you fill his hide with harpoons or his head with fishing spears?

8 If you lay a hand on him, you will remember the struggle and never do it again!

9 Any hope of subduing him is false; the mere sight of him is overpowering.

10 No-one is fierce enough to rouse him. Who then is able to stand against me?

11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.

12 I will not fail to speak of his limbs, his strength and his graceful form.

13 Who can strip off his outer coat? Who would approach him with a bridle?

14 Who dares open the doors of his mouth, ringed about with his fearsome teeth?

15 His back has rows of shields tightly sealed together;

16 each is so close to the next that no air can pass between.

17 They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted.

18 His snorting throws out flashes of light; his eyes are like the rays of dawn.

19 Firebrands stream from his mouth; sparks of fire shoot out.

20 Smoke pours from his nostrils as from a boiling pot over a fire of reeds.

21 His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from his mouth.

22 Strength resides in his neck; dismay goes before him.

23 The folds of his flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable.

24 His chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone.

25 When he rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before his thrashing.

26 The sword that reaches him has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.

27 Iron he treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood.

28 Arrows do not make him flee, sling stones are like chaff to him.

29 A club seems to him but a piece of straw, he laughs at the rattling of the lance.

30 His undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing-sledge.

31 He makes the depths churn like a boiling cauldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.

32 Behind him he leaves a glistening wake; one would think the deep had white hair.

33 Nothing on earth is his equal— a creature without fear.

34 He looks down on all that are haughty; he is king over all that are proud.

Isaiah 27:1 he is called the “wriggling serpent” who will be killed at the end of time.[2]

[…] Isaiah 27:1 uses the first of these phrases to describe Leviathan (although in this case the name “Leviathan” apparently refers to an unnamed historical/political enemy of Israel rather than the original serpent-monster).[citation needed] In Psalm 104, Leviathan is not described as harmful in any way, but simply as a creature of the ocean, part of God’s creation. It is possible that the authors of the Job 41:2-26, on the other hand, based the Leviathan on descriptions of Egyptian animal mythology where the crocodile is the enemy of the solar deity Horus (and is subdued either by Horus, or by the Pharaoh). This is in contrast to typical descriptions of the sea monster trope in terms of mythological combat.[2]

[edit] In later Jewish literature

his companion to the words of Job xli. 18: “By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning” (B. B. l.c.). However, in spite of his supernatural strength, the leviathan is afraid of a small worm called “kilbit”, which clings to the gills of large fish and kills them (Shab. 77b).[6]

 [edit] Christianity

The Leviathan of the Middle Ages was used as an image of Satan, endangering both God’s creatures—by attempting to eat them—and God’s creation—by threatening it with upheaval in the waters of Chaos.[7] St. Thomas Aquinas described Leviathan as the demon of envy, first in punishing the corresponding sinners. (Secunda Secundae Question 36) Leviathan became associated with, and may originally have referred to, the visual motif of the Hellmouth, a monstrous animal into whose mouth the damned disappear at the Last Judgement[…] [edit]

Leviathan in Satanism

In LaVeyan Satanism, according to the author of The Satanic Bible, Anton Szandor LaVey, Leviathan represents the element of Water and the direction of West. The element of Water in Satanism is associated with life and creation, and may be represented by a Chalice during ritual.

“Sidi-Nouman,” replied the Caliph, “your story is indeed a strange one, and there is no excuse to be offered for your wife. But, without condemning your treatment of her, I wish you to reflect how much she must suffer from being changed into an animal, and I hope you will let that punishment be enough. I do not order you to insist upon the young magician finding the means to restore your wife to her human shape, because I know that when once women such as she begin to work evil they never leave off, and I should only bring down on your head a vengeance far worse than the one you have undergone already.”

Death on a Pale Horse

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are described in the last book of the New Testament of the Bible, called the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ to Saint John the Evangelist at 6:1-8. The chapter tells of a “‘book’, or ‘scroll’, in God’s right hand that is sealed with seven seals”. The Lamb of God, or Lion of Judah (Jesus Christ), opens the first four of the seven seals, which summons forth four beings that ride out on white, red, black, and pale horses. Although some interpretations differ, in most accounts, the four riders are seen as symbolizing Conquest,[1] War,[2] Famine,[3] and Death, respectively. The Christian apocalyptic vision is that the four horsemen are to set a divine apocalypse upon the world as harbingers of the Last Judgment.[1

The Book of Abramelin

Structure [edit]

The grimoire is […] describes his journey from Germany to Egypt and reveals Abramelin’s magical and Kabbalistic secrets to his son […]Abraham recounts how he found Abramelin the Mage living in the desert […]He discussed nothing but “the Fear of God”, leading a well-regulated life, and the evils of the “acquisition of riches and goods.”

[…]After this, Abramelin gave Abraham the “Divine Science” and “True Magic” embedded within the two manuscripts, which he was to follow and give to only those whom he knew well.

Once this is accomplished, the magician must evoke the twelve Kings and Dukes of Hell (Lucifer, Satan, Leviathan, Belial, etc.) and bind them. Thereby, the magician gains command of them in his own mental universe, and removes their negative influence from his life. […]

The magical goals for which the demons can be employed are typical of those found in grimoires

[…]For example, a square entitled “To walk under water for as long as you want” contains the word MAIAM (מים or ماء), the Hebrew and Arabic word for “water”. […]

The Hebrew monster Leviathan found in the Book of Job has given rise to many popular incarnations. This article treats subjects with no direct connection to the Ancient Middle East or Jewish origins.

[edit] Literature

Leviathan is the title of Thomas Hobbes’ 1651 work on the social contract and the origins of creation of an ideal state, and his proper name for the Commonwealth.

In Paradise Lost, Milton uses the term Leviathan to describe the size and power of Satan, the ruler of many kingdoms.

The Leviathan appears in the last book of the 1975 The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson as a colossal, intelligent sea creature in the shape of a tentacled pyramid.

In Steven Brust’s novel To Reign in Hell, Leviathan (female in this case) is one of seven elder inhabitants of Hell who conspire to prevent Yahweh from creating the Earth as a sanctuary for himself and those loyal to him.

Beelzebub was a prince of the Seraphim, just below Lucifer. Beelzebub, along with Lucifer and Leviathan, were the first three angels to fall. He tempts men with pride and is opposed by St. Francis of Assisi.

Islamist haters blocked at East London University

University & student union fail to publicly condemn preachers

London – 18 March 2013

The University of East London (UEL) blocked an Islamist meeting that was due to be held on the Stratford campus last Friday, 15 March. The meeting was billed as featuring hate preachers Khalid Yasin and Jalal Ibn Saeed.

The meeting was also advertised with “segregated seating”, where women would be forced to sit separate from men.

The Peter Tatchell Foundation, LGBT Society at UEL and the Braki blog lobbied for the meeting to be cancelled.

Khalid Yasin says homosexuality and lesbianism are “aberrations, they are immoralities.” He endorses the execution of gay people.

He also insists that Muslims should not have non-Muslims as friends, condemning non-Muslims using the derogatory term, kaffirs. He praises public executions and amputations and claims AIDS is a western and World Health Organisation conspiracy to kill Africans.

C.ET: and do not worry before killing the gays or whatever else to be more specific, they sure would chuck people out, one by one, of the universities.

It is not believes but insanity growing out of desire to be god personified (if not perfectionable, or purified) in the demon, since it is easier to mimic, even though they are already sold to the world of facility.

It’s Sensitive. Really. By William Broad

December, 13, 2005

New York Times, Science Times

“But a team of scientists from Harvard and the National Institute of Standards and Technology has now made a startling discovery: the tusk, it turns out, forms a sensory organ of exceptional size and sensitivity, making the living appendage one of the planet’s most remarkable, and one that in some ways outdoes its own mythology.

The find came when the team turned an electron microscope on the tusk’s material and found new subtleties of dental anatomy. The close-ups showed that 10 million nerve endings tunnel from the tusk’s core toward its outer surface, communicating with the outside world. The scientists say the nerves can detect subtle changes of temperature, pressure, particle gradients and probably much else, giving the animal unique insights.

“This whale is intent on understanding its environment,” said Martin T. Nweeia, the team’s leader and a clinical instructor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Contrary to common views, he said, “The tusk is not about guys duking it out with sticks and swords.”  By William Broad December, 13, 2005

Challenges and threats

“Around 30,000 small whales, dolphins and porpoises die each year as a result of becoming entangled in fishing gear and drowning. Known as ‘bycatch,’ this accidental catch is one of the greatest threats to cetaceans.

Whaling is another huge problem. Systematic over-exploitation has brought some species close to extinction. In the Antarctic alone, more than two million whales were killed by commercial whalers during the 20th century. In 1986 the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling. However, loopholes in the rules mean whales can still be hunted for “scientific purposes”. This happens in countries such as Japan and Iceland.

Other threats facing whales include being struck by ships, chemical pollution from industry, and disturbance by noise from navy operations and seismic surveys, and depletion of prey as a result of over fishing”.  (wwf)

“The idea that Islamist extremists would threaten a fellow Islamist extremist is absurd. The planned student protest against Thahabi was always going to be peaceful and never made any threats, as far as I know.
“Unless the university has evidence they have not disclosed, its professed reason for cancellation looks like a vile, disgraceful smear against legitimate, non-violent protesters.
“To its shame, the university appears to have used a phoney excuse to cancel a speaker who never should have been invited to speak in the first place. Inviting Thahabi clearly violated the equal opportunities and non-discrimination policies of the university and the student’s union.
“Women, Muslim and LGBT students have a right to go to university without being menaced and threatened by hate preachers.
“Disgracefully, the Vice Chancellor has failed to condemn the Muslim Society for inviting
“Thahabi’s hateful, violent views are not shared by most Muslims in Britain,” said Mr Tatchell.
See below the briefing about Abu Usamah at-Thahabi’s history of murderous incitements, sexism and threats against fellow Muslims.
See this online local Reading press report of the meeting’s cancellation, posted at 19.30 last night:
A letter had been sent by the Peter Tatchell Foundation to the Vice Chancellor of Reading University, David Bell, protesting at the university’s decision to host Abu Usamah at-Thahabi, on the grounds that Thahabi had been filmed by Channel Four’s Dispatches programme justifying the murder of gay people. Incitement to murder is a serious criminal offence.
Below is a copy of this letter.
Other protests were made against Thahabi by the anti-extremist organisation, Students Rights, and by Reading University students.
Vice-Chancellor, Reading University
Dear David Bell,
I understand that Mr. Abu Usamah at-Thahabi is giving a talk at the University of Reading on Thursday, 28th February 2013.
This individual has incited hatred and murder of homosexuals. He has abused his right to free speech and infringed the right of LGBT people to go about their lives without threats or fear.
Please click on this link for more evidence of Mr at-Thahabi’s history of preaching hate and violence against LGBT people:
It is not good enough to monitor his presence on Thursday. His conduct before attending the University of Reading needs to weigh heavily upon any decision to permit him onto university property.
Allowing him to speak at your university would be a de facto reward for incitement to homophobic violence.
I would urge you to deny him a platform or hospitality, as it would be an insult to past/present/future LGBT individuals attending your university.
If Mr Abu Usamah at-Thahabi’s previous remarks had called for the murder of Jewish or black people I am sure he would not be permitted to speak at your university.
I urge you to not collude with a man who incites murder, and to not adopt double standards on incitements to racist and homophobic violence.
Equality for all. Hatred against none.
Yours with best wishes,
Peter Tatchell

Background Briefing on Abu Usamah at-Thahabi
Abu Usamah at-Thahabi has previously urged that gay people should be punished with death.
“Do you practice homosexuality with men? Take that homosexual man and throw him off the mountain,” Thahabi was recorded as saying by Channel Four’s Dispatches programme.
“If I were to call homosexuals perverted, dirty, filthy dogs who should be murdered, that’s my freedom of speech, isn’t it?”
On Muslims who leave the faith he said: “Kill him in the Islamic state…If the Imam wants to crucify him, he should crucify him. The person is put up on the wood and he’s left there to bleed to death for three days.”
He was filmed by Channel Four deriding women as “deficient”, inferior to men and religiously and intellectually “incomplete.”
He advocates violence against little girls who refuse to wear the hijab: “She should start hijab from the age of seven, by the age of ten it becomes an obligation on us to force her to wear hijab and if she doesn’t wear hijab, we hit her.”
Thahabi was caught on camera making these incitements while addressing worshippers at the Green Lane Mosque in Birmingham.
When he was later interviewed by Channel 4 News, he refused to withdraw or apologise for his comments.
