The act of writing is a powerful one. In this extract, Niranjana considers that stereotypical representations of other people in writing are dangerous because they will stay around in a fixed format. Indeed, books, essays, and other written artefacts tend to go down in history and continue to be used and read. This means that stereotypical representations, and the notions of difference that they entail, will continue to define the relations between people of different cultures, and will do so in a way that is entirely guided by the colonisers. The fact that these constructions of others’ identities become fixated in writing is problematic for several reasons: (1) the colonised had no say in the way that they were represented which is, arguably, unethical; (2) identities, social relations, cultures etc. are not fixed but evolve continuously, something which a representation cannot do justice to; and (3) colonised people (like the ‘native boys’) may end up accepting these constructed representation as truthful and even desirable, since they will be around for some time and take the form of ‘official’ or scholarly formats (e.g. books).

The Treaty is a broad statement of principles on which the British and Māori made a political compact to found a nation state and build a government in New Zealand. The document has three articles. In the English version, Māori cede the sovereignty of New Zealand to Britain; Māori give the Crown an exclusive right to buy lands they wish to sell, and, in return, are guaranteed full rights of ownership of their lands, forests, fisheries and other possessions; and Māori are given the rights and privileges of British subjects.
The Treaty in Māori was deemed to convey the meaning of the English version, but there are important differences. Most significantly, the word ‘sovereignty’ was translated as ‘kawanatanga’ (governance). I was in Pakistan in 2011 when the cold blooded murder of Punjab governor Salman Taseer took place. Taseer had taken up Bibi’s cause. Shortly after that in the same year, Pakistani minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian, was gunned down for speaking out against the blasphemy law.
In 2012, seven Christian women and children were burnt alive, several dozen people were injured and nearly 180 houses were looted and destroyed in three Pakistani towns. These acts were carried out on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations of “desecrating the Holy Quran by the Christians.”

The New York State attorney general’s office filed a scathingly worded lawsuit on Thursday taking aim at the Donald J. Trump Foundation, accusing the charity and the Trump family of sweeping violations of campaign finance laws, self-dealing and illegal coordination with the presidential campaign.
The lawsuit, which seeks to dissolve the foundation and bar President Trump and three of his children from serving on nonprofit organizations, was an extraordinary rebuke of a sitting president.

You may remember from L801 that translation and politics are often linked, and that when a system or country aims to keep its borders strong (like totalitarian regimes often do) translation is often perceived with suspicion. This is because translation can bring in new ideas and ways of thinking that do not necessarily conform to the ideological expectations of the receiving country. Translation crosses and blurs the boundaries between systems, and being able to control this process was important for fascist regimes. This is one of the reasons why dubbing tends to be viewed more favourably in totalitarian regimes – when the soundtrack of the original film is completely replaced with a target language version, it becomes easier to censor and manipulate what is being said.
In 1930, Mussolini issued a decree of language protection, which was later extended in 1933 (5 October). Fascist governments, like the Spanish and the German regimes, greeted this measure with enthusiasm and adopted it in their own countries some years later (Germany, the Reich Film Law, 1934 and the Enabling Act, 1936; Spain, Act of 23 April 1941). These laws restricted the number of foreign films that could be shown in these countries and enforced the dubbing of all foreign films into their respective target languages (Katan, 2010, p. 11).
The strong censorship applied by the Francoist regime in Spain (1939-1975) resulted in many foreign films being banned or having sections cut if the content was deemed immoral or politically dangerous. The dubbing process was also often used to tone down the language or remove undesirable references.
One of the most bizarre examples of inept censoring was the dubbing of the film Mogambo (1953) where, in their efforts to avoid the topic of infidelity, the censors turned husband and wife Donald Sinden and Grace Kelly into brother and sister. Although this legitimised Kelly’s seduction by Clark Gable, it resulted in strange scenes where she and Sinden were kissing or sleeping together. In attempting to cover up adultery, the Spanish censors ended up with a film that seemed to promote incest.

Białowieża Forest (Belarusian: Белавежская пушча, Biełaviežskaja Pušča; Lithuanian: Baltvyžio giria; Polish: Puszcza Białowieska Polish pronunciation: [ˈpuʂt͡ʂa ˌbʲawɔˈvʲɛska] ( listen)) is one of the last and largest remaining parts of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain. The forest is home to 800 European bison, Europe’s heaviest land animal.[2] UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programmedesignated the Polish Biosphere Reserve Białowieża in 1976[3] and the Belarusian Biosphere Reserve Belovezhskaya Puschcha in 1993.[

I was in Pakistan in 2011 when the cold blooded murder of Punjab governor Salman Taseer took place. Taseer had taken up Bibi’s cause. Shortly after that in the same year, Pakistani minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian, was gunned down for speaking out against the blasphemy law.
In 2012, seven Christian women and children were burnt alive, several dozen people were injured and nearly 180 houses were looted and destroyed in three Pakistani towns. These acts were carried out on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations of “desecrating the Holy Quran by the Christians.”
